Speaker Bios for May 13th Sessions

SESSION ONE: 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM

Clément Guénard

Clément Guénard is a sustainable building analyst with Arborus Consulting. He has worked on a large variety of sustainable buildings, from single-family homes to large commercial and institutional projects. He is also member of the CaGBC’s Energy Modeling Rules Taskforce and an alternate member of the CaGBC’s Energy & Engineering Technical Advisory Group.

Janna Levitt

In 1991 Janna Levitt joined Dean Goodman to form Levitt Goodman Architects Ltd.  The firm is based in Toronto and has grown to add a new partner, Brock James, 4 associates and a staff of 23. Janna is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo.  Levitt completed both a General Arts degree and her Professional Bachelors Degree in Architecture at the University of Toronto.

Shawn Carr

Shawn Carr is a project manager for Halsall Associates and a member of Halsall’s Green Planning and Design group in their Ottawa office. Shawn has experience assessing and greening existing buildings. He has also worked with organizations to design and implement sustainable business strategies and organizational systems that are needed to drive results.

Sheryl Boyle

Sheryl Boyle is a professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University where she teaches and conducts research in the area of recycling architecture and adaptive reuse, focussing on traditional technologies to advance the dialogue on contemporary sustainability.  Her work has been presented at International Conferences in Finland and the United States. 

Jamie McKay

Jamie McKay is a building science and sustainability consultant at Morrison Hershfield (MH) in Ottawa, Ontario.  He has worked on LEED and Green projects primarily in the area of Building Science, specializing on high performance building envelopes, green roofs, building durability and natural building materials. Jamie has submitted and co-authored over 20 project Durability Plans/Tables (ranging for residential buildings to rammed earth institutional projects).

Liliane Wong

Liliane Wong is a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. She received her MArch from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a BA, Bachelor of Art, in Mathematics from Vassar College. She is the co-founder of Int|AR, the journal of Interventions and Adaptive Reuse.

Rob Clements

Rob Clements is the Atlantic Canada Sales Manager for S.A. Armstrong Ltd. Rob has a strong HVAC systems background having worked with Trane Canada, Siemens, a leading HVAC  controls manufacturer, and now a major pump, heat exchanger  and controls manufacturer over his 25 year career in the HVAC industry.

Robin Hutcheson

Robin Hutcheson, P.Eng., LEED AP is a 28 year veteran of the engineering and energy industries and is specialist in renewable energy.  He has lead his firm through over $500Million in green building projects and over ten years of solar, small wind and biogas energy projects.  Having recently founded a solar development company, Robin has delivered a 30MW solar park to investors and is presently working on approximately 10MW of solar projects for rooftop & ground mounted applications under Ontario’s Feed-In-Tariff program.

Toon Dressen

Toon Dressen is a graduate of Carleton University School of Architecture and has been a practicing architect in Ottawa since 2005 with a diverse background of work including residential renovations/adaptive reuse, heritage, institutional and commercial work.

Jamie Shipley

Jamie Shipley is a Senior Advisor, Research and Technology Transfer with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Ontario Business Centre. Jamie has over (25) years experience in the residential construction industry and he is a Graduate Technologist member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists. Jamie has also developed and facilitated technical courses and presentations to the Ontario Real Estate Association and he provides guidance and assistance to the Ontario Business Centre on construction practices and industry trends.

Marco Frascari

Marco Frascari obtained his first degree from The Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, and then completed a Dottore in Architettura at the Istututo Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) followed by a Master of Science in Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is presently on sabbatical but will return to his position as Director at the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton. Marco is also a Registered Architect since 1971. 

Jeffery Price

Jeffrey Price is a well known lecturer in building construction, having conducted lectures and workshops at industry conferences, educational facilities and historic preservation events. Jeffrey connects the immense expertise acquired over years of research and practice at Virginia Lime Works with the world of professionals, tradespeople, and consumers. 

Ian Theaker

Ian Theaker is a Senior Sustainability Specialist with Halsall Associates. Notable projects include leading LEED rating system adaptation for the Canada Green Building Council; the LEED-NC Platinum OHSU Riverside Campus; Portland’s AIA COTE Top Ten “Lloyd Crossing Sustainable Urban Design Plan”; Santa Monica’s Green Building Guidelines; and “Building Environmental Performance Assessment Criteria”, a LEED forerunner.  

André Potworowski

André Potworowski is Adjunct Professor at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, where he heads the project “Making it happen – the transition to a sustainable society.  He is also Managing Partner of management consulting firm TMA-Technology Management Associates.  He has worked in sustainability topics since the Conserver Society was published by the Science Council of Canada in 1973.

William MacIvor

William MacIvor is a Project Architect with Toronto-based E.R.A. Architects Inc., specializing in adaptive reuse and historic conservation.  He holds a Masters degree in architecture, and is a graduate of both Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.  Prior to joining ERA, William worked with four international firms, including UNStudio, Behnisch Architects, and Rick Joy Architects.

Chris Warden

Chris Warden is an Intern Architect and LEED Accredited Professional with MTBA Mark Thompson Brandt Architect & Associates in Ottawa.  MTBA is part of a conservation and integrated project delivery team on the Former Bank of Montreal Rehabilitation Project in Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct.

Darryl Boyce

Darryl K. Boyce, P.Eng. joined Carleton University as Director of the Department of Physical Plant in 1998 and was promoted to the position of Assistant Vice-President (Facilities Management and Planning) in 2007. He came to Carleton having spent the previous twelve years with the University of Western Ontario where he served as Associate Director, Facilities Engineering and Construction directing activities related to alterations, new construction, energy management, and utilities operations. Darryl is a Fellow Member of ASHRAE and has been a Member since 1983. Darryl has served on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as a Director, Regional Chairman (Region II), a Director-at-large, and a Vice-President. Mr. Boyce is the Past President of the Ontario Association of Physical Plant Administrators (OAPPA), Past Chair of the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO) National Facilities Management Committee, and a member of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) Information and Research Committee. He completed the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta.

Michel Oster

Michael Oster has a quarter-century of progressive experience in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including employment with IBM and Sun before joining Cisco in 2000.  In his current role, Michael leads Cisco Canada’s strategy in Education and Government. 

Pierre De Gagné

Pierre De Gagné is a professional engineer who graduated from the University of Waterloo in Engineering and has distinguished himself through many National and regional prizes and awards.  He has given talks at National and regional conferences on the subject of Sustainable Development, process re-engineering for efficiency and energy recovery.

Claude Brulé

Claude Brulé has been the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Trades at Algonquin College since December 2007. The Faculty includes the School of Advanced Technology, School of Transportation and Building Trades, and the Heritage Institute, a rural campus in Perth, Ontario.  Before that, he spent eight years as the Academic Chair of the Computer Studies Department. Prior to joining Algonquin College, he was a Communication and Electronics Engineering officer in the Canadian Forces for twenty-three years.  He obtained his BEng (Phys) and his MSc (Math) from the Royal Military College in Kingston where he also taught in the early 1990s. His last tour of duty, prior to retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1999 at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel was with the Directorate of Aerospace Engineering – Radar and Communications Systems in Ottawa.

Gary Martin

Gary Martin is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University studying sustainable dwellings under the supervision of Professor Patricia Ballamingie. Gary brings additional insight to his presentation from his 20 years experience as a renovation contractor and carpenter.

Richard MacIntosh

Richard MacIntosh brings a passion for sustainable design, with the focus on cost-effective and intelligent systems integration. As part of Halsall’s Green Building Group, Richard works with developers, architects and mechanical and electrical designers to help create high-performance, energy efficient and integrated systems. Richard has worked on residential, institutional and commercial buildings ranging in size and complexity. Richard experience extends beyond buildings, to community energy analysis, to inform low-carbon and sustainable community energy plans.   

Benjamin Gianni

Benjamin Gianni is an Associate Professor in the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton University.  His current research explores the structure of suburbia and the redevelopment post-war public housing ensembles, comparing policies and projects in Canada, the US, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Speaker Bios for May 14th Sessions

SESSION 4:  8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Vince Catalli

Since 1994, Vince Catalli has been specializing in the area of Sustainable Development related to the design, construction and building management.  Over his career he has helped to advance various sustainable innovations including reviewing LEED in the context of heritage buildings for PWGSC and more recently reviewing climate change vulnerability within the context of buildings for Engineers Canada in 2008.  Vince is Vice Chair of a CSA Committee on Green Buildings that has recently published a guideline on Design  for Disassembly and Adaptability in Buildings.

Christopher Simmonds

B.E.S., B.Arch., OAA, MRAIC, LEED®AP
Christopher Simmonds is the Principal of the award winning firm Christopher Simmonds Architect Inc., which he started in 1996.  Chris takes great pride in focusing on the relationship between buildings and the natural environment and has been recognized for this through several awards including the Ottawa Region Chapter — Canada Green Building Council Leadership Award which he received in 2008.  In 1999 Chris partnered with Linda Chapman Architect to design the Mountain Equipment Co-op store in Ottawa which was a ground breaking project for energy efficiency and for its environmentally advanced approach to construction.

Alberto Palomino

Alberto Palomino has received his Bachelor of Architecture and is now a MBA 2010 candidate from Montreal. He has professional experience in Architecture, Project Management and Real Estate IT for commercial and multi-residential buildings.  Alberto is currently working on B.I.M. applications for EB geared towards energy auditing and sustainable planning. Originally from Lima, Peru, Alberto is fluent in English, French and Spanish.

Sue Clark

Sue Clark, MArch LEED AP, is a sustainability consultant with Morrison Hershfield.  Her current projects include the Ottawa Archives and the University of Ottawa Social Sciences Tower. Sue prepared her master’s thesis on metals as building materials: their physical characteristics, social and mythological histories, and their architectural usage and relevance.

Lucie Fontein

Lucie Fontein, B.Arch., M.Arch. OAQ  is an Associate Professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, Carleton University. She has conducted research in the areas of design in housing; computer modeling of lighting installations; pedagogical issues regarding architectural technology and building construction.

Renée Gratton

Renée Gratton, LEED® A.P. of RG Integration is a consultant. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), representing retail construction and products. She is an instructor in the Architectural Program at La Cité Collégiale, and Algonquin College Corporate Centre for various courses including CaGBC’s ‘Building Green with LEED Course’. She is the founder of Ottawa’s Construction Recycling Initiatives Task Group and sits on the advisory group to the Canadian Standards Association new Guideline on Deconstruction.

Erika Mayer

Erika Mayer is a sustainable building specialist with 10 years experience in the buildings industry. She was instrumental in the development of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and helped bring LEED® and its related programs and resources to Canada. She runs an innovative green building consulting company called Lunchbox Consulting Inc. that focuses on enabling sustainable solutions for the built environment. She is the past Treasurer of the Ottawa Region Chapter — Canada Green Building Council and Chairs the Chapter's Existing Building Committee.

Mark Brandt

Mark Brandt is Senior Conservation Architect, Urbanist and Heritage Consultant with MTBA Associates. A LEED AP, Brandt's practice explores interconnections between natural and cultural conservation. In over 30 years, Mark has successfully completed over 430 built projects, reports and assessments, from the Master Plan for redevelopment of a key 43-acre industrial heritage district, to the adaptive reuse for the House of Commons Hall of State. His numerous awards include the Ontario Heritage Trust Achievement. Past President of Historic Ottawa Development Inc., Past Chairman of Ottawa LACAC,a member of APTI, Mark has served as a Director of several other cultural and urban development organizations, including currently with the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals and the Ottawa Regional Chapter of CaGBC.

Woytek Kujawski

Woytek Kujawski is an architect with experience in high performance residential and commercial buildings and sustainable development.He works as a Senior Researcher at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, has served for 6 years on the Board of International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment and is LEED® accredited

Jan Kubanek

Jan Kubanek is an architect working at ERA Architects, a well-known architecture and building conversion firm in Toronto. His background in construction carpentry has fostered a keen interest in the conservation of wood construction, currently put into practice at the Sharon Temple, the Miller House and numerous other projects.

Justin Kurosky

Justin Kurosky is currently finishing his 4th year in Civil Engineering at Carleton University.  His focus so far has been structural but with the progression of his fourth year project, involving the testing of retrofitted concrete specimens, his interests are shifting towards the fire and materials side of structural engineering.  He is looking into pursuing an option for his M.A.Sc in Fire Safety Engineering.

Brett Hughes

Brett Hughes is now finishing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree, with special interests in material properties after exposure to fire and the implementation innovative retrofitting techniques. Education and work related experience have facilitated his ability to clearly explain scientific research and conduct himself in a professional manner.

Susan Ross

Susan Ross, M.Sc. Planning (Conservation), OAQ, LEED AP, is a senior conservation architect with Heritage Conservation Directorate, Government of Canada. She is former co-chair of the Association for Preservation Technology’s Technical Committee on Sustainable Preservation and was a member of the planning committee of the Conserving the Modern conference held at Trent University.

Venk Prabhu

Venk Prabhu is an M.Arch candidate at Carleton University.  Experience in software programming and an interest in architectural sustainability has granted him a unique perspective on the function of technology in design. His recent collaboration with the Carleton Immersive Media Studio and Autodesk Research is the subject of this presentation.

Stephen Fai

Stephen Fai is an Associate Professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, Carleton University and he is currently the Director of the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS).  Dr. Fai holds a professional degree in architecture and a PhD in Religious Studies.  He has written and lectured on the theory and practice of architectural representation and the history and theory of Christian architecture.  His professional work includes renovations to the Convent Filles de la Sagesse, Ottawa (with Cecilia Humphreys Architect), an addition to St. James Anglican Church, Manotick (with Graham Murfitt Architect), and The Sound of One Hand Recording Studio, Ottawa.  He has received project funding from the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, the Millennium Bureau of Canada, the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council.

Beth Holst

Beth Holst is Vice President, Credentialing, for the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). She leads the professional credentialing programs for GBCI, including the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP with Specialty credentials. Beth serves on the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP), the ANSI Conformity Assessment Policy Committee (CAPC), the ANSI Certificate Accreditation Program's (ANSI-CAP) Accreditation Committee, and is a member of the Project Management Institute. She is a graduate of American University with a BA in Political Science and has a paralegal certificate in Business and Environmental Law from University of San Diego. She lives in Springfield, Virginia, with her husband, a retired Navy captain.

Steve Dulmage

Steve Dulmage, Director of Education and Training, Canada Green Building Council. Steve joined the CaGBC in 2006 and since then has overseen a steady expansion of the CaGBC education program. As one of the earliest CaGBC staff members, Steve has witnessed firsthand the phenomenal growth of LEED and green buildings in Canada, including increasing demand for education to support the growing ranks of LEED Accredited Professionals working on green building projects. Prior to joining the CaGBC Steve worked in government and as a consultant in the UK, developing sustainability programs for regional government and business.

Bud Brannigan

Bud Brannigan is the director of Bud Brannigan Architects, a small design practice  in Brisbane, Australia. Project work ranges through residential, to campus buildings and landscape structures, to museums and galleries. The practice has been honoured  with numerous awards, including several  from the Australian Institute of Architects, receiving, in 1994, the national Robin Boyd Award for residential architecture. In 2007, Bud also received a Churchill Fellowship to study regional museums in southwestern USA. His work  has been widely published  and exhibited in Australia and overseas.

Mariana Esponda

Mariana Esponda is an architect and assistant professor Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, Carleton University. Since 2004 she has taught several times as a visiting professor, in Mexico, USA and Spain. She has a doctorate in Construction & Restoration from UPC, Spain. Since 2000 to date, she has participated in different conferences and seminars about the Spanish and Mexican patrimony restoration, and as of 2001 has been published various articles on this subject. Between 2000 and 2008, she undertook projects in Barcelona and Mexico to rehabilitate historical buildings and assessed this traditional technologies & structures for new uses in architecture.

Brian Kyle

Brian Kyle, P.Eng, serves as Facilities Life-cycle Management Specialist under the Engineering and Technical Services, Professional and Technical Service Management Real Property Branch for Public Works and Government Services Canada. He participates in CSA and ISO standards development in the field of Buildings Sustainability as well as serving as Chair of the Canadian Advisory Council (CAC) to ISO Technical Committee 59/SC14 on Design Life. Brian was the Federal Government Project Manager for the Ottawa Tunney’s Pasture buildings case study and is currently Chair of the Buildings Expert Working Group for the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Guideline being developed by Engineers Canada.

Michael Oster

Jens Burgen

Transitioned from Information Architecture, Jens Burgen joined forces with the green building industry to provide clients with the tools to organize, pursue and maintain green certifications while opening opportunities for participating in carbon markets.  Jens is undergoing professional accreditation with the GHG Management Institute and is a LEED-AP while working on numerous LEED projects in the Ottawa area.

Roxie Graystone

Roxie Graystone has degrees in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph and Law from Queen’s University and has started a unique environmental practice (Graystone Environmental) in Ontario that provides environmental legal counsel along with sound technical and policy advice.
