The Re-evolution of Material Selection

Brandon Malleck, LEED-AP
Idea Consultant
Professor at Algonquin College
Building Science Consultant

In the earliest form of building design, materials were selected based on their durability, their proximity, their ease of assembly and disassembly. With the current global marketplace, building material selection has evolved to discount these fundamental principles and focus instead on elements such as cost, aesthetics, speed of assembly, short term performance and reduced liability risk.

This knowledge session will challenge the status quo and force participants to apply the simple material selection principles which were applied in the founding our country. The session will address two key elements: material life cycle analysis and durable building design in the context of existing strategies, technologies and framework. This session will focus on the use of natural currency as opposed to monetary currency.

Local Climate, Site and Passive Strategies for Buildings in Ottawa

Scott Shillinglaw, LEED AP

This presentation will focus on the impacts and benefits local climate and site can have on a building design.  The discussion will include the relation of climate and site to passive building strategies.

Green Building Design Resources

Teresa Hanna

Are you new to the green building industry and wondering where to go for information? Join Teresa Hanna, B.Arch., LEED AP, as she gives an overview of available green building programs in Canada, and gives her top list of where to find more information, including books, websites, and other resources. This will be useful for any new entrants to the green building industry. Free admission with valid student card, $20 everyone else.

Thursday, January 21, 6pm, The "Pit" (first floor) Carleton University Architecture Building, 1125 Colonel By Drive.

Charrette Workshop and Museum Tour

Ghislaine Johnson

This 1.5 hour workshop will introduce the Integrated Design Process (IDP) including the Charrette.  Ghislaine will present tools and resources that will be useful when planning and executing a Charrette.  The Charrette will be followed by a tour of the Canada Museum of Science and Technology’s storage facility.  This tour will give students an idea of the space that will be required for the museum’s exhibits as well as to get students thinking about preservation, security and diversification of their conceptual design.  This tour is also open to ORC CaGBC members, and offers a rare opportunity to explore the vast amount of collections and pieces owned by the Canada Science and Technology Museum.  These pieces simply do not fit into the Museum’s current home and will not all be exhibited in their new building.

The workshop will be held at 2pm at the Canada Museum of Science and Technology and the tour will begin at 3:30pm.  The workshop and tour are open to Eco-Logical delegates, as well as CaGBC members and their guests.

For more information on the Integrated Design Process, click here.

Registration for the workshop and tour 2-5pm Feb 1, 2010 at Canada is $40
