Ghislaine Johnson B.Sc. B.Eng LEED AP

Ghislaine is a Project Associate working on the Halsall Associates LTD. Ottawa Green Building team, having started in June 2008.  Ghislaine believes in the understanding of the implications of human activities within the urban ecosystem as a way for finding responsible solutions to create a more liveable society. One of Ghislaine’s main strength is her integrated design approach, bringing the client’s needs into a multidisciplinary dialogue aimed to achieve the most responsible solution for her the projects.  Currently Ghislaine is working on a range of projects in Ottawa and Toronto.  Most notably she is working with the design team for both the new construction at La Cite Collegiale and Algonquin College providing project support, technical assistance, monthly construction reviews and compiling LEED NC application material for submittal to the CaGBC.

Ghislaine’s other interests include urban agriculture, yoga (including being a yoga instructor) and exploring the fine arts that Ottawa has to offer.

Vince Catalli, B. Arch. LEED AP

Vince is a Senior Program / Project Manager with MHPM Project Managers. Since 1994, he has been specializing in the area of Sustainable Development related to design, construction and building management. In 2002 he helped start the National Capital Green Building Association that is now known as the CaGBC ORC. Vince is Vice Chair of a CSA Committee on Green Buildings that has recently published a guideline on Design for Disassembly and Adaptability in Buildings (Z782-06). Recently, Vince worked with Public Works and Government Services Canada and Engineers Canada to manage and complete a Case Study that reviewed climate change and the vulnerability it will pose on 3 buildings located at Tunney’s Pasture Campus in Ottawa. Over his career he has work with many organizations including the Mountain Equipment Coop, Canadian Tire, Canada Post, Alberta Environment, Greater Vancouver Regional District, Nova Scotia Transportation and Public Works, Department of National Defence, Environment Canada and Canadian War Museum to name a few. His focus has been to advance sustainable innovations within the built environment including rain water catchment systems, deconstruction (3Rs demolitions), green specifications, tenant involvement programs, healthy building programs, etc. His interests include the fine arts, theatre, community involvement, challenging the status quo, business reading and keeping physically active.

Teresa Hanna, B.ARCH., LEED AP

Teresa is a founding partner of live | ARCHITECTURE, a progressive firm built upon a commitment to creating exceptional architecture that enriches ones experience, fosters community and is respectful of the environment. Teresa is an exceptionally active member of the sustainable design community; she was among the first LEED Accredited Professionals in Ottawa (2003); has been an active volunteer with both the NCGBA and ORC CaGBC; and is now Co-Chair of the Education & Events Committee.

Teresa is also Vice President of the National Capital Chapter of the Young Environmental Professionals (YEP). Both now and in her previous consulting Teresa has been specializing in sustainable design and construction practices: researching, evaluating systems and materials; detailing and coordinating the incorporation of these; and facilitating implementation during construction to ensure an integrated solution is achieved, realizing the potential of each project to be as sustainable as possible.

Bara Al-Obaidy, B.Eng.

Bara Al-Obaidy is currently working as a project associate for Halsall, with the Facility Services Team. Bara’s studied at Concordia University, where he received his bachelors of engineering in Building Engineering. His professional interests are in building science and he is currently focused in building restoration jobs in Ottawa and Montreal. His recent projects include window replacements and envelope overclads for highrise buildings as well as concrete structure restorations. His interest in sustainable design was initiated during his involvement with the Solar Decathlon Competition.

Some of Bara’s other interests include music, camping, and traveling.

Jason F. McLennan, LEED AP, CEO (Cascadia Region Green Building Council), Seattle, WA

Jason McLennan - Cascadia Green Building CouncilJason McLennan serves as the CEO of the Cascadia Green Building Council, the Pacific Northwest’s leading organization in the field of green building and sustainable development. Cascadia is a chapter of both the US Green Building Council and the Canadian Green Building Council. Jason is the author of the Living Building Challenge an international green building program and co-creator of Pharos, the most advanced building material rating system in North America. Jason is known as an international thought leader in the green architecture movement and has lectured on sustainability across the US and Canada. His work in the sustainable design field has been published or reviewed in dozens of journals, magazines conference proceedings and books including Architecture, Architectural Record, Dwell, Plenty, Metropolis, NY Times, The Globe and Mail, The World and I, Ecostructure and Environmental Design and Construction Magazine. He is the author of three books; The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, The Dumb Architect’s Guide to Glazing Selection, and the Ecological Engineer. The Philosophy of Sustainable Design is currently used as a textbook in over 40 universities and colleges and is distributed widely throughout Europe and North America.

He is a former Principal at BNIM Architects, one of the founders of the green design movement in the United States, where he worked on many of the leading high performance projects in the country including LEED Platinum, Gold and zero energy projects. At BNIM he created the building science team known as Elements, which set new standards for energy and resource efficiency on many of its projects in various building types. Jason is also the founder and CEO of Ecotone Publishing, the only dedicated green building publisher in North America. Jason was recently named one of the top 40 under 40 most influential individuals in the design and construction field by Building Design and Construction magazine.

Scott Shillinglaw, M.Sc.(Eng.), P. Eng, LEED AP

Scott manages the Green Building group in Halsall’s Ottawa office. Scott has experience in greening new and existing buildings as well as community scale projects. He has worked on over 60 green building projects. Scott is an experts in carbon accounting, and has managed carbon inventories across Canada for a diverse client base including building owners and managers, hospitality organizations, media and communications, professional services firms, non-profit groups and conferences. He is responsible for enabling Halsall’s Ottawa green team and delivering best-in-class and timely service to clients. In addition to Green Building experience, Scott also has a background in both building envelope and structural design.

Brandon Malleck, B.A.Sc., LEED AP

Brandon believes that environmental sustainability is achieved through meaningful initiatives which make sense both socially and economically. He has a keen interest in with both new construction projects and existing building work. Brandon provides guidance to property managers and operators to green their practices and operations. He also provides innovative ideas based on experience in over 4,000,000 sq ft existing building consulting projects.

Brandon recently lead a team to determine the environmental life cycle analysis of the Parliamentary West Block rehabilitation project.  The goal was to provide context of a life cycle assessments, educate the design team through a workshop, provided recommendations to the design and recommendations for future life cycle assessment integration to Public Works and Government Services Canada projects.

He is presently the Design Architect for the new 911 Institute/Institut Des Services D'Urgences at La Cité Collegiale in Ottawa which is anticipating a LEED Silver rating. He has a passion for design innovation through an integrated process, always striving to define the meaning of sustainability in the built environment. Christopher is on the editorial committee for the OAA Perspectives magazine.

Danielle Krauel, B.A.Sc, LEED AP

Halsall Engineers ConsultantsDanielle believes that the building industry plays a major role in the world’s environmental and social impact.  Her past experience and ongoing involvement with mechanical engineering speak to her interest in new technology, innovation and energy-efficient design. Through her work with Halsall’s Green Building Design team, Danielle aims to help in producing buildings with higher environmental standards.

Kate Whitfield P. Eng., MCIP, RPP, LEED AP

J.L. Richards Engineers Architects PlannersAs both a Registered Professional Planner and a Professional Engineer, Kate brings a unique perspective to a project. Kate is a member of the municipal engineering team at J.L. Richards & Associates Limited and is involved with both the design and contract administration elements of road and sewer rehabilitation projects. With both credentials, there is the option for Kate to work on the engineering elements of a land development project, as well as in the preparation of relevant planning documentation and approvals.  On a regular basis, Kate also provides planning advisory services to local municipalities.  With her LEED AP, Kate has demonstrated her commitment and interest in green building practises and sustainable community planning. Kate often is responsible for providing project support and technical assistance on LEED NC applications.

Laszlo Mohacsi, Arch. Tech Dipl., B.Arch., OAA, MRAIC, CaGBC

Live ArchitectureLaszlo is both an architect as well as an architectural technologist. His career focus has been in design development, detailing, and construction administration, with an emphasisis in implementation, from design to construction drawings and through construction, promoting integrated solutions to contractor and users alike. He has worked with notable architects and firms such as Douglas J. Cardinal, KWC Architects and Diamond and Schmitt Architects, as well as establishing his own practice, live Architecture, with partner Teresa Hanna. Through his professional consulting and practice he is  determined to createe better environments through a commitment to excellence in design, exceptional detailing, craftsmanship and sustainability.

The fundamental notion that ’design is the tool we have always used to shape the way we live’, and the reciprocal relationship between  architecture and its environment  is the core of Laszlo’s motivation to create better spaces for living, and drive  to advance design integrity. His firm, live Architecture, is a progressive architecture and design practice, dedicated to professional development in Sustainable building design and construction; creating liveable, functional environments, that enrich the daily experience not only of the users and client, but the community at large.

Ed Lowans

Ed studied history and economics at York University and completed an executive management training program at the T. Eaton Co. After ten years in management he moved to consulting and led teams on precedent-setting projects for over 35 years, advancing the art and science of sustainable planning, design and manufacturing. Working with leading edge engineering firms including DST, Keen, Stantec and Halsall he consulted on over 100 sustainability projects internationally including many LEED buildings. He is an author, expert witness, adjunct professor of sustainable design and a frequent speaker with a focus on capacity building at the state-of-the-art level.

Isabelle Bradbury, OAQ, OAA, MRAIC, LEED AP

Isabelle Bradbury heads a bilingual architectural firm in Gatineau, using the principals of sustainable development as the template for all her work in spatial and product design.  The interest is multidisciplinary and the company often partners with other professional firms from an integrated design approach.  Using travel as the vehicle and metaphor for discovery and pleasure, the experiences that distinguish life from merely existence, Isabelle’s firm actively pursues projects in the transportation sector and the destination institutions and places that spark the journey.

Isabelle began applying her interest in the environment to architecture as a delegate and exhibitor at the Natural Resources Canada Green Building Challenge in Vancouver in 1998.  She obtained her LEED accreditation from the US Green Building Council in 2003,  joined the first elected board of directors of the Canada Green Building Council the following year and was re-elected in 2006.  She has served on the EQuilibrium and Healthy Housing awards selection committees for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation from 2006 to 2008. Published in numerous media, the firm's work was the subject of a documentary televised by ARTV (Montreal) in 2005 and featured in the book Architecture:  Habitat et Espace Vital au Québec, 100 maisons contemporaines  published by the Université de Laval in 2006.

A self-professed trade-show junkie, Isabelle is known to skip lectures in order to delve into the hubbub of the exhibition floor at GreenBuild and seek out what’s new,  innovative and beautiful in materials and products among the booths.  Isabelle allows herself the daily indulgence of reading the morning newspaper while sipping organic fair-trade coffee with cream and is partial to world cinema and cuisines, theatre and lively conversation with those with stories and viewpoints to share.  She enjoys running with the Capital Road Runners and faces the personal challenge of the Boston Marathon in April.

Darrell de Grandmont, B. Arch, OAA, LEED® AP, Associate

HOK ArchitectsDarrell de Grandmont is an award winning architect and associate with HOK Architects Corporation. He has 12 years of experience on a range of office, commercial, institutional and LEED® certified projects of varying scope and scale.  Some of his current projects include the Carleton University Steacie SuperLab, Queen’s University Green Chemistry Laboratory, Environment Canada Landscape Ecology Laboratory, Canada Post Corporation Iber Road Letter Carrier Depot, Ottawa Police Services West Division Patrol Facility and the Canadian Space Agency David Florida Laboratory Addition.

Darrell has recently studied the process of biomimetic design with the Biomimicry Guild and its co-founder Dayna Baumeister at Biosphere 2 in Tucson, Arizona.  He has worked for various museums and science centres including the Canada Science and Technology Museum, The Canadian Museum of Nature, Science North and Gatineau Park as a park naturalist, educator, program developer and lastly exhibit designer.  Darrell is fluently bilingual (French and English).

Daniel Gosselin  P. Eng., ing., PMP, LEED AP

MHPM Project ManagerDaniel Gosselin is a Senior Project Manager with MHPM Project Managers. His experience has focused on energy conservation strategies for buildings as well as alternative energy systems. He was project manager for the design and construction of the first horizontal GeoExchange system for Wal-Mart where 15 km of pipe was installed in one week.

Daniel Gosselin est un Gérant de Projet chez MHPM Project Managers. Son expérience est axée sur l’efficacité énergétique de bâtiment ainsi que sur l’énergie renouvelable. Il était le gérant de projet lors de la conception et de la construction du premier système d’énergie géothermique horizontal pour Wal-Mart où 15km de tuyauterie a été installé en une semaine.

Claude Faubert

MHPM Project ManagerDirector General at Canada Science and Technology Museum

Claude Faubert joined the Canada Science and Technology Museum in 1992 as an exhibition project manager. After serving as its director of Education from 1994 to 2000, he became its director general in the fall of 2000. Before joining the museum, he had worked as a museum and science communication consultant. He started his career in museums and science centres at the Ontario Science Centre where he worked for nearly ten years. As director general of the Canada Science and Technology Museum, he is responsible for all aspects of the ongoing operations of the museum and he is also very much involved in developing plans for a new museum of science and technology. The Canada Science and Technology Museum is the only comprehensive science and technology museum in the country.
